Matt: We knew video ads would work as long as people wanted to click them for some reason, so we had that nugget there. If you've played Disco Zoo, and seeing the ads work well in that – we actually spoke with the guys there, and it was something we were thinking about too. How were we going to monetise it though? Andy: We did it all in one session, had this big brainstorming session and came up with all these ideas. We originally were looking at a publisher, but when we told them about the idea, they were like 'ehhh, it sounds okay.' So that kind of threw us a bit, but we decided to self-publish it. The game was going to be a lot simpler originally. Players can play co-cooperatively or competitively, as characters can push each other to their deaths, but players will also re-spawn if their partner makes it far enough on their own.The free-to-play model (watching optional ads to earn coins, which you can use to buy characters, or you can purchase them with real cash) you guys have used is a bit different to other games we've seen, did you have it in mind from the start? Matt: It wasn't really from day one. Two players can cross roads endlessly on the big screen, with one player using the Apple TV remote while the other plays on their phone. With the release of the 4th generation Apple TV, developers Hipster Whale added multiplayer to the TV version of Crossy Road. The different characters will sometimes change certain aspects of the visual look of the game, but do not affect the gameplay. The game contains multiple characters that can be earned by using in-game coins to get a random one, or they can be purchased for $0.99 individually. Swiping to the left, right, or back will move the character in that direction. Each tap of the screen will make the character jump one square ahead. The gameplay is similar to that of Frogger in which players hop across roads, fields, rivers, and more. In Crossy Road the goal of the game is to get as far as possible without dying. Crossy Road is a retro style endless runner developed by Hipster Whale and published by Hipster Whale (iOS) and Yodo1 Games (Android, Windows 8, Windows Phone.) Gameplay
